The Archive of Interrupted Light is a film museum project conceived within the broader masterplan for Andrejsala, Riga: a post-industrial district poised for regeneration and cultural reintegration. The masterplan responds to the site’s unique waterfront context and its history of restricted access, aiming to reconnect Andrejsala with the city and create a vibrant public destination.
At the heart of the project is a programmatic narrative centered on the concept of “uncensoring.” The museum’s spatial journey is designed as a vertical progression from darkness to light, symbolizing the transition from censorship and suppression to creative resistance and, ultimately, revelation. Each level and architectural gesture is carefully calibrated to reflect this thematic arc: the lower floors are defined by solidity and enclosure, echoing the constraints of censorship, while upper levels become increasingly open and transparent, culminating in spaces of clarity and expansive views.
This narrative is not only expressed through the exhibition content but is embedded in the materiality, spatial organisation, and circulation of the building. The Archive of Interrupted Light thus offers visitors an immersive journey both physical and conceptual through the layered histories of film, freedom, and cultural expression.
